When Spongebob first hit the airways in 1999 the animated series became a huge hit on the cable network Nickelodeon . The show was not only a hit with kids but with adults as well. So, it was just a matter of time before the popular series became a motion picture. This happened in 2004., with The Spongebob Squarepants Movie. The film takes on the story of what would actually happens if Plankton did manage to foil Mr. Krabs and get his hands on the Krabby Patty Formula. Plankton manages to do this with Plan Z which has him framing Krabbs by making it look like he stole Neptunes Crown. To prove Mr Krabbs innocence Spongebob along with Patrick set out on a quest to clear his name which means heading to Shell City to retrieve Neptune's Crown. But while they are away Plankton sets his plan in motion to take over Bikini Bottom.
The movie does have some entertaining moments such as Spongebob and Patrick thinking they are now adults (giving rise to the famous "Now That We're Men" Song)thanks to suppose Mermaid Magic by Neptune's daughter Mindy played by actress Scarlett Johnasen,. There is also fun cameo by David Hasselhoff playing himself, but unfortunately for the most part it does lack the whimsy found in the early years of the TV series. Most of the movie is devoted to Spongbob and Patrick's quest which means fans of characters such as Squidward or Mr. Krabbs are pretty much out of luck their role in this movie is pretty small. Also, there is some inconsistency here for anyone who is a long time viewer such as myself. The film featured a Krusty Krab 2 being opened at the beginning and Spongebob wanting to be the general manager a job he got at the end. However, this was never explored in the actual series in the years since the movie.
Why is that? It has been rumored online that the series creator and then Executive Produce along with head writer Stephen Hillenburg intended for this movie to be the end of Spongebob's saga. In other words, no new episodes after this film. But although Hillenburg left after the movie, production of new episodes continued. Now eleven years later Spongbob is still being made and still no mention of a Krusty Krab 2 or Spongebob being it's general manager. Oh well, maybe we just need to look at this movie as a glimpse into the future of what will happen down the road in Spongebob's life, so as far as the series in concern this hasn't happened yet. What has happened is yet another motion picture that came out in 2015 called Spongebob: A Sponge Out of Water, for the record no Krusty Krab 2 in this film either.
