"Ash has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead until a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind and Ash becomes mankind's only hope."
For the first three episodes, here are my thoughts about the series so far.
Tone:
The series itself has an over-the-top tone, probably harking back to the well-known Evil Dead franchise. I guess things were a little more unrealistic in the 80's. It can be clearly seen with all its special effects, character's lines and interactions, and the overall plot of the series as well. Also, the humor of this series might fall flat at times, but it does have its laughs.
Characters:
Well, for a series that is over-the-top the characters themselves are quite--ok? Unless you're a self-absorb asshole, an emo chick, or a friendzoned loser, you won't really relate to most of the main cast. But what actually makes the characters ok IMO, is their interactions with one another. Granted, it's no 'Breaking Bad' level of character progression, but the series knows what it is, and treats their character in the same over-the-top tone that perfectly blends with all the crazy, gorey, evil things that's happening around them.
Effects:
Here is where I really loved the series, the throw-back to the practical effects of horror movies in the 80's make each kill scene of this show extra gorey and awesome. And it's not like a snuff film kind of gore, the gore is still believable while at the same time, you know its fake. (Did that make sense?)
And especially, in episode 3 (the latest one) I really liked he design of one of the demons. It was really well made, and you can really feel that it came from the depths of hell. Awesome.
Story:
Well, the story is pretty straightforward. It's still 3-episodes in so we won't know if it has the predictable storyline or something different. One thing I am sure about this series, that it's gonna be quite a ride until its finale. Something to really look forward to.
Overall:
For fans of the Evil dead franchise, or gorey horror movies with a dash of humor in general, will love this series. And with TV shows that are either long-standing franchises, remakes, or superhero shows. It's quite a treat to see something more different, and more groovy.
Here's the trailer if you're interested.
