This past week I made the snap decision to see the film Sicario, Trailer. I was going to see the Martian, but arrived to the theater late . My friend suggested this based of the positive word of mouth on the internet. I'm glad he did, as it's one the years best films. The plot centers on a team of CIA/DEA agents trying to bring down the Mexican drug cartels. Nothing new there, but the story is pushed along in an unorthodox fashion. It's not your typical bang-bang shoot'em up. Sicario's tension swells and explodes thanks to it's stunning performances and flawless direction. Director Denis Villeneuve creates vast cinematic shots of the landscapes of Mexico and Nevada. Some of the shots here are breathtaking, and that's saying a lot about a film that mostly takes place in the desert and rural areas. The cinematography is technically perfect, and the same can be said of the performances. Emily Blunt is a great lead as the naive CIA agent. Josh Brolin also does a convincing job as the man in charge of the operations. But it is Benicio Del Toro's mysterious character that steals the show. What's great about the movie's direction here, and this could be credited to the script as well, is how strikingly realistic it is set up. Everything in the movie is shot in a gritty and pulse-pounding fashion. Granted the last twenty minutes or so might seem bombastic to some, but on a whole I think it compliments the film. Sicario comes highly recommended and is one the best surprises of the year.
Recommended if you like 'Traffic,' 'No Country for Old Men' or any movie about the inner workings of drug cartels.
