The Secret of Nimh(1982) Trailer
The Secret of Nimh is a 1982 animated film based on the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. This would be the first animated film put out by the Don Bluth studios and one of my favorite movies of all time. In the movie the main character’s name is changed from Mrs. Frisby to Mrs. Brisby, but the over all plot remains the same. The story evolves around a field mouse Mrs. Brisby who is a widow mouse raising her family in a small box inside a farmer's field. However, Mrs. Brisby is in crisis, her family must move before Spring plowing, but her youngest son Timmy is gravely ill and as things stand can't be moved. In the midst of all this Mrs. Brisby befriends a crow by the name of Jeremy who helps her to narrowly escape the Farmer's cat known as Dragon. Jeremy also adds some much-needed comic relief to the movie, that can get a bit too serious at times and maybe a bit over kids head because of that reason. Jeremy takes Mrs. Brisby to see the old Owl which she knows is a dangerous thing to do but feels that the Owl could have answers to her problem. Upon finding the Old Owl he advises Mrs. Brisby the timid little field mouse to seek out a rat name Nicodemus within the rose-bush.
This leads Mrs. Brisby on an adventure inside the rose-bush next to the farmers house where Nicodemus and the rats of Nimh live. Turns out Nicodemus knew Mrs. Brisby’s husband, who had been part of a lab experiment along with Nicodemus and the Rats. The rats are also in jeopardy because the farmer intends to exterminate them. Mrs. Brisby although still afraid offers to help the rats out and they in turn agree to help her. However, treachery inside the rat’s own ranks leads to the death of Nicodemus and Mrs. Brisby proving her own inner bravery to save her children along with her home.
The plot is relatively simple, with love giving someone the inner strength to save the day. But what really makes The Secret of Nimh stand out is the outstanding animation. The animation is seamless in every frame. Also, the visual effects are amazing to look at. The scene toward the end of the film where Mrs. Brisby must save her kids from peril is so captivating that the first time I saw this movie I couldn't take my eyes off the screen because this scene was so intense. This film would later have a sequel that was made for video called, The Secret of NIMH: Timmy to the Rescue which isn't even half as compelling as this one and something I can't recommend. However, The Secret of NIMH remains a film that I can recommend for the whole family. Yes, some of the subject matter such as Nicodemus death maybe a bit disturbing for younger kids but the over all story never grows old.
