I've been into Coen brothers movies since Blood Simple first came out. And a long road from that memorably avant black-and-white to the grand bourgeoise pleasures of O, Brother it's been. Unfortunately this movie is that detour of missteps that all artists who break ground must make and is best seen drunk. They start on solid ground with their famous visual flair.
Then misstep one: A terrifically foul-mouthed hiphop character probably seemed fun to write; I'm pretty sure he wasn't added to widen their audience, since also included are some fine gospel songs as well as several popular mainstream actors. This character's dialogue makes me reconsider my own frequent profanities since realizing how tedius their frequent repetition becomes.
Another misstep is in the misdirection of whatever is not vulgar, raucous, or slapstick. Hanks started out as a sitcom actor as did most of the other actors, and there's a familiar idea that absurd humor is heightened by playing it seriously, but the acting here is almost somber when it's not being nearly pantomimed like something from a penny dreadful.
For whatever reason the characters seem to be spliced in from several different movies. This might be caused by shooting so often from straight ahead so that the camera gave the actors the only reaction to the lines.
In all fairness, this is still much better than so many other offerings. It's also an antidote to superheroes, supernaturals, fast kill detonations. It's just not surprising in a good way.

I watched this last week on Netflix and thought it was hilarious, especially the witty banter between the characters. I don't know why people don't like this Coen Bros film, I thought it was great.

Thanks for the recommendation. This movie has the same rating as Intolerable Cruelty (the first 30 minutes of which was so "Intolerable", that I gave up on it); which is probably why I never bothered to watch another Coen brothers flick that was rated less than 7 on imdb.
