Let's be honest; we know that an Oscar is really the award that most actors and directors pine for. The Golden Globes is more like a party where Hollywood is allowed to drink. The Globes' ceremony is far more laid back than the Oscars, but that may be why they are so much more fun to watch. Even though receiving an Oscar is the crème de la crème of filmmaking, getting a Golden Globe isn't too shabby either, even if Ricky Gervais is drunkenly tearing apart Hollywood heavyweights or Jonah Hill is making an ass out of himself.
Yes, the Golden Globes is a night where the stars laugh, drink and become merry. And merry they were as films like The Revenant and Jobs took home several awards. As they should; both were top contenders of the year's best offerings. But who cares about those?
The real awards that make headlines are the ones that are totally unexpected and come out of left field. Isn't it far more interesting to watch a complete underdog finally name a golden statuette than the world's biggest stars? Well it is if they are deserving of the title. And to be fair, many of the "surprises" from the Golden Globes were.
But some were not. Hey, everyone makes mistakes, especially Hollywood. Here are what I think the biggest surprises of the Golden Globes were, as well as the biggest middle fingers to well-deserving movies.
Sylvester Stallone Wins Supporting Actor for Creed
This was one of the BEST surprises of the night. I for one thought Creed was a revelation. A fantastic sequel in a sea of meteoric reboots and half-assed productions. A large part of that goes to director Ryan Coogler. A large part also goes out to his fantastic band of actors, most notably Stallone, who gives one of the best performances of his career as an ailing Rocky. Don't believe it's deserving? Check out this standing ovation the guy got at the Globes. Bravo Sylvester, enjoy it my friend.
The Martian Wins for Best Comdey?
Remember that hilarious film The Martian that came out this year? The one that starred Matt Damon and Kevin Hart as two Martian police detectives constantly finding themselves in trouble by their space chimp sidekick? Neither do I; because it doesn't exist! The actual Martian movie was a drama that INCORPORATED stylings of comedy, but to define it as one and then have it win in said category is absolutely asinine. We get it Hollywood, you wanted everyone's favorite 2015 movie to get an award. Just give it one that it deserves next time.
Mad Max, Spotlight and The Big Short Walk Away with Jack Shit!
Okay I realize that The Big Short didn't generate enough buzz despite being an awesome film. But Spotlight, which got rave reviews from critics, without a single award? And the Globes must be completely out of their mind for not giving anything to what many hail as the year's best film, Mad Max. I know that it was nominated in both Best Drama and Director and The Revenant, a great film, nabbed both, but come on, nothing for George Miller and the crew? Mediocre Golden Globes!
Jennifer Lawrence, Again?
First let me state that Joy, would should have been a great film, was a terrible film. Second, let me state that it wasn't a comedy but again, a drama that has comedic undertones. Third, let it show that Jennifer Lawrence getting the award again for a lackluster movie and performance is almost unbelievable.
Terrible Bond Theme = Golden Globe?
Coming from an avid Bond fan, Writings on the Wall by Sam Smith is one of the worst Bond themes I've ever heard. That's why I couldn't believe the award for Best Original Song went to that awful mess of a theme. I mean Writings on the Wall is a bad song; it sucks. Actually all the nominees for Original song sucked. This is more a question of why Hollywood can't write a decent song rather than why a terrible one won an award.
Ennio Morricone Has Still Got It
After years of not doing much of anything, legendary composer Ennio Morricone proves he can still whip up a hell of a score with his award for his work on The Hateful Eight. Morricone's score is tense, suspenseful and powerful. A deserving award for one of Hollywood's most deserving composers.
Those are all my favorite/hated highlights, what's yours? Leave comments for what you thought was the biggest surprise of the Golden Globes was.
