For the second year in a row, all of the acting categories in the Oscars feature all white actors. Best Actor, all white. Best Actress, all white. Best Supporting Actor and Actress? White. Needless to say this has created outrage and chaos among the Hollywood community. Whether or not it actually warrants chaos and outrage, well that's another thing.
The controversy first sparked when Spike Lee publicly stated that he won't be attending the Oscars due to the lack of African American nominations. Although the filmmaker didn't use the word 'boycott' it started a reaction of other Hollywood players to pull out of the ceremonies. Shortly after, Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith also stated that they would not be attending the Oscars as well.
Former Academy President Hawk Koch wrote an open letter to the Academy to boost opportunities for people from non-white-backgrounds. Other actors, including Mark Ruffalo, have spoken out against the Academy for only nominating white actors and actresses for the Oscars.
Needless to say the issue has stirred up quite the debate on the internet. Is the academy snubbing minorities and specially African Americans on purpose? No probably not. The truth is that Spike Lee's directing and Will Smith's acting just wasn't up to snuff with the rest of the nominations this year. I will admit that Idris Elba definitely got snubbed for not getting a Best Supporting Actor nod for his amazing role in Beasts of No Nation; but refusing to go to the Oscars just because all of the Actor nominations are all white? It just sounds a little, childish to me.
What do you guys think? Are these Hollywood actors and directors overeating, or are they justified? Leave comments below.
