We're less than one week away from finally getting the ultimate big-screen gladiator match; the Dark Knight vs. the Man of Steel. Before we watch the two DC titans duke it out, we should reflect on all the cinematic glory the two characters have already given us. It would also be nice to refresh ourselves with this superhero universe by watching some of their past movies.
So here are the 10 Best Batman and Superman Movies.
10. Superman Returns
Superman has seen his tops and downs when it's come to his movie career. While this one isn't quite as bad as Superman IV: the Quest for Peace, it's not that great either with a boring superman and miscast Luthor. Only watch this one if you don't have the means to watch any of the following 9.
9. The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan's last entry in the Dark Knight trilogy is the weakest of the three but still features some notable moments, the best being the anticipated fight between Batman and Bane lifted straight out of the comics. While the run time is rather long and the story is a bit all over the place it's still a formidable entry for the caped crusader.
8. Man of Steel
After Superman Returns was credited for being too slow, director Zack Snyder made a more action packed film with Man of Steel. The movie is bombastic and fast paced with Superman getting himself into a lot of fights with other Kryptonians. While the plot leaves something to be desired the action scenes are indeed incredible.
7. Batman Returns
Tim Burton's sequel to 1989's Batman is much darker than his previous efforts. This entry has the Dark Knight doing battle with not only Penguin, who is running for political office, but Catwoman as well. The movie flirts between the border of dark and just plain creepy, but the end result is a Batman film that's thoroughly enjoyable.
6. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Mask of the Phantasm is not just the best animated Batman movie, but one of the best Batman movies period. Sure Under the Red Hood has some great moments, but Phantasm is cinematic in scope. Dealing with Bruce's troubled past and former lost love, the story is gripping while the action scenes are ferocious and beautifully animated. This is a must watch for any Batman fan.
This movie which kickstarted the Dark Knight's movie career was directed by Tim Burton which starred Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Dark, Gothic and full of action Batman 1989 still remains one of the strongest Batman entries thanks to it's lovely production design and terrific performances, most notably Nicholson's Joker.
4. Superman II
Before Superman went toe-to-toe with Zod and the other Kryptonians in Man of Steel he first entered battle with them in 1980's Superman II. This was the first big budget film that featured a full blown fight sequence between two superhero and supervillain heavyweights. The story, which has the hero give up his powers for Lois Lane, is also cleverly written. With an always top notch performance with Reeves in the, this is one of the best Superman movies.
3. Batman Begins
After the disastrous results of Batman & Robin the franchise of the Caped Crusader was in serious need of a makeover. Enter Christopher Nolan who gave audiences for the first time a real look into Bruce Wayne as a character. Wayne's origin story is chronicled here like no other Batman movie and gave the viewer an inside look at what fuels the character to become Batman.
2. Superman The Movie
The first superhero epic that set the bar for everything to come after it, 1978's Superman The Movie is still the Man of Steel's best. It has a wonderfully built script by Mario Puzo, who also wrote The Godfather. It has experienced direction by Richard Donner which is complemented by John William's memorable score. Best of all however is Christopher Reeves who perfectly encapsulates Superman's character.
1. The Dark Knight
What can be said that hasn't already? Not only the best Batman film but possible the best superhero movie of all time. Christopher Nolan's crime epic has Batman go at it with his arch rival, the Joker, while chronicling the rise and fall of DA Harvey Dent. The Dark Knight is poetic and powerfully acted by everyone involved, bu the film will be forever immortalized by Heath Ledger's once-in-a-lifetime performance of the Joker. An absolute classic film.
