There’s been a lot of talk about “Alien: Covenant” lately. Just a few weeks ago, Ridley Scott announced that we’d be seeing at least a couple more prequels after Covenant is released, and those will finally tie the movies (the three prequels and 2012’s “Prometheus”) into the original 1979 picture. Last month, Fox released a synopsis for the movie, which weirdly left out actress Noomi Rapace. According to the director, the actress will be seen only in passing on the new movie. Now, it’s been confirmed that actress Katherine Waterston is joining Michael Fassbender in this new installment, in what looks like a lead character. Waterston has starred on Paul Thomas Anderson’s film “Inherent Vice”, and will be appearing on the new “Harry Potter” spin off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”.
Scott mentioned that he felt the need to produce these new prequels out of frustration that none of the other movies in the “Alien” franchise attempted to answer the question of who actually created the alien. According to him, in “Prometheus” the audience starts to get an idea of who might have been responsible for that, and the new movies will further expand on that. The director had to postpone the production of “Covenant” in favor of this year’s “The Martian”, and the visuals of both movies will probably look pretty similar, seeing as he’s planning to mix both location and studio shootings again.
Specific plot details are not yet known, though according to Fox’s release, “the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition”. The movie starts shooting this next March, and is going to be released on October 6th, 2017.
