“The Little Mermaid” upcoming live-action movie has been having a hard time securing a director. However, this time, it looks like they’re about to close a deal. Rebecca Thomas, who’s been announced to be directing the “Looking for Alaska” screen adaptation, is in talks to take over the direction for the movie. Earlier this year, Sophia Coppola dropped out of the project mentioning “creative differences”, and there were rumors that the studio’s decision to hire a profitable and high profile star for the main role might have been the reason she decided to leave. Universal has been trying to hire a new director ever since, and they might have just found it in Thomas.
Apparently, the new movie will be based on the original Hans Christian Anderson story, though it’s still unclear how much will actually be borrowed from it, seeing as the stories from that time period are not known for their chipper and happy nature. Plot details are also still unknown, and the script for this movie has changed hands several times along the process. Right now, Richard Curtis is listed as writing the screenplay. He is known for writing movies like “Love, Actually” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.
Actress Chloe Grace Moretz has been cast as the lead actress, and no other casting news have been announced. The movie will be released in 2017, though there isn’t a set date or even a date for the beginning of filming.
